Guide to Designing Your Wedding Cake

Whether it will be classy and elegant or fun and whimsical, you can design your wedding cake uniquely to reflect the ambiance of your special day. The possibilities are limitless and you should feel comfortable knowing that you can have the centerpiece of your reception to be everything that you have ever dreamed it to be. Here are a few considerations to take into account when designing your wedding cake.

You have options as to what shape your cake will be. Round and square being the most traditional shapes, then oval or hexagon shaped tiers as well. There are heart shaped tiers, however cakes are only seen from the side and the heart shape tends to gets lost. Square cakes may be aligned or offset from each other. Different shapes stacked upon one another give a sophisticated look. Stacked cakes are very popular. That is, there are no pillars, just cake tier on cake tier. Shorter pillars can be used to make spaces between the tiers in which fresh flowers can be placed to get the effect of floating tiers.

Fresh flowers are a great way to incorporate color into your cake. Your florist will be able to help you select flowers for your cake. Satin ribbon is also popular to wrap the base of each tier for an elegant touch. The ribbon may be white or may coordinate with your wedding colors. The color scheme chosen can be incorporated into your cake’s design with frosting or fondant accents as well.

Look at your wedding gown to start gathering ideas on the design that will adorn your wedding cake. Are there pearls, embroidery or lace patterns that may be translated onto the cake? Drapes, swags, pearls and or ribbons made of dried sugarpaste resembling your gown can embellish your cake as well. Is your gown white, ivory or another hue? If you would like to coordinate the hue of your gown with your cake, make sure you bring a swatch to your consultation so that the color may be matched as best possible. Keep in mind that frosting reflects light differently than material.

Consider the season that your wedding will take place. A spring wedding cake may have fresh cut flowers or may have tinted pastel tiers. A summer wedding cake could have an ocean theme with white chocolate or even real shells upon it. If your wedding is scheduled during an afternoon of a warm weather month, you may want to choose a fondant covered cake rather than a buttercream that would be prone to melt in the heat. Fall wedding? Beautiful orange and red autumn leaves made of fondant would make a beautiful adornment. Glistening snowflakes would be stunning on a winter wedding cake. If you have chosen any particular theme, this may influence your cake design.

Flavors! Click on my flavors link to view my list of cake flavors as well as fillings and frostings. If you don’t see what you had in mind, please just ask. There are no limits to the possible combinations of flavors. Mountain Berry cake made with fresh raspberries paired with raspberry buttercream is by far my number one seller, followed by Chocolate Fudge or Vanilla Almond cake with raspberry fruit filling.

Plan on having at least one serving of cake per guest. Some guests may choose not to have cake at all, while others may take seconds. The size of a wedding cake serving is approximately 2" by 1 1/2" by 4". If you wish to have larger cake servings for your guests, consider ordering additional servings.

Look through wedding magazines and look at wedding cake web sites. Get ideas. Get a feel for what you like and what you do not like. When you come to your consultation bring example pictures of cakes that you have found, sketches you may have drawn, a picture of your wedding gown, swatches you may have. An invitation or even a napkin may give inspiration to your cake design. If you have a cake topper, bring it as well. An heirloom cake topper would add a sentimental value and could also fulfill your “something old”. You may also choose to have a lifelike bow or bouquet of flowers made from sugarpaste atop of your cake. A topper of fresh cut flowers is timeless and dazzling.

From a simple elegant design to an elaborate work of art, your wedding cake will be a reflection of you and the ambiance of your special day. My goal is to make the experience of creating your wedding cake fun and enjoyable. There are enough stressors in planning your wedding and this should not be one of them. You should feel confident that this timeless symbol of your wedding day will be a centerpiece to remember that will be as delicious as it is spectacular.

Best wishes planning your special day!
